Units: 1.Exploring the keyboard 2.Feeling the beat 3.Legato playing 4.Staccato playing 5.Developing dexterity 6.Playing chords 7.The left hand 8.Playing with dynamics Mastering the piano is the first series of books to be launched in the Lang Lang Piano Academy, a major new piano programme from Faber Music encompassing a range of materials for pianists of all levels. Comprising five progressive books, mastering the piano captures Lang Lang's passion, drive and extraordinary mastery of the piano. Each book gives students the chance to learn from this exceptional talent who has impressed the world, containing: 8 units that develop key aspects of piano technique; specially devised exercises and studies focusing on each technical area; a diverse selection of piano repertoire including Lang Lang's best-loved works; beautiful arrangements of music from around the world; inspirational commentary and guidance from Lang Lang himself; stunning photo section of the pianist and examples of art that has inspired his own playing.
The whole book is very user friendly and has a pleasingly personal touch, with messages from Lang Lang, several colour pictures of him playing and tips saying how he masters each technique. This is not a traditional A Dozen A Day type of technical book, it is more than that, linking exercises, repertoire and tips in one volume. I can see this being a very useful and effective book for my Grade 1 and 2 pupils – they probably will not even realise that it is about technique, and the 'Lang Lang effect’ may encourage and inspire them in an imaginative way.
