Description

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,

but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

PROVERBS 1:7

The book of Proverbs tells us how to live, how to feel, and how to make decisions - it is wisdom for life.

In this searching commentary, Kirsten Birkett considers how we can use Proverbs as a guidebook for our lives today. She shows us how Proverbs gives prudence to those who are gullible, knowledge and discretion to the young, learning for the wise, and guidance for the discerning. This book is training in godly living; the truly rewarding, enriching life.

Critic Reviews

This is a wise commentary on an important book. Birkett's exposition is both clear and compelling: she shows how Proverbs integrates with all of Scripture and applies Proverbs to modern contexts in numerous skilful ways. Birkett also helpfully negotiates a number of linguistic and theological problems raised by the book. Both pastors and lay people will be greatly helped by this commentary. -- Eric Ortlund, Lecturer in Old Testament and Biblical Hebrew, Oak Hill College
