Jack Kerouac

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1922, Jack Kerouac was the youngest of three children in a Franco-American family. His first novel, The Town and the City, was published in 1950. However, it was On the Road, released in 1957 and recounting his adventures with Neal Cassady, that defined the “Beat generation” for the world and established Kerouac as a prominent writer of his era. He went on to publish many other books, including The Dharma Bums, The Subterraneans, and Big Sur. Kerouac viewed his autobiographical fiction as a single, expansive work titled The Duluoz Legend. He passed away in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1969, at the age of forty-seven.
