Critics Review
Katie’s pilgrimage through the Shipping Forecast isn’t about heroic feats, but about the simple, stubborn magic of keeping going. It’s a tender, human adventure that reveals what can unfold when you honour a promise and keep paddling forwards. * Alastair Humphreys, adventurer and author *An inspiring tale, brimming with can-do and positivity. * Tristan Gooley, author of The Natural Navigator *Intimate and poignant, Katie’s odyssey through the Shipping Forecast areas which her brother never got to complete is both a thrilling adventure and a profound meditation on family, on grief, and on the ways in which love and death can shape us. * Charlie Carroll, author of The Lip *A tender, courageous voyage through loss and love - a story that glows with humanity on every page. Katie Carr guides us through life’s dark storms with astonishing grace. * Gavin Knight, author of The Swordfish and the Star *What a courageous, compelling and beautiful book from Katie. The honesty and openness with which she takes us on her artfully written journey through seas, grief and adventures will have you reflecting on your own life and loves. I felt it all. * Sarah Outen, adventurer and author *A deeply personal and thought-provoking journey through kayaking and life’s challenges. Katie’s honest, insightful voice, tracing her quest along stretches of the UK coastline, will inspire and resonate with many long after the final page. * Doug Cooper, sea kayaking coach and author *A sea‑salted memoir, as steadying and compelling as the Shipping Forecast. Thundery at Times charts the uncertainty of grief with a voice that is both tender and courageous. * Zeb Soanes, broadcaster and author *Thundery at Times is a compelling tale of the strength of the human spirit and the unbreakable bond between siblings. Katie writes with enthralling determination, crushing vulnerability and immersive picture-painting. She describes the concerns we all face - being a good parent, being a good sibling, being a good worker - with cutting accuracy. And she reminds us that hope, and the resilience to keep moving forward, can shine in even our darkest moments. Toby would be incredibly proud. * Si Willmore, journalist and broadcaster *Thundery at Times captures something essential about grief - that it asks us to keep going even when we don’t know how. Carr’s honest, heartfelt writing about finishing her brother’s challenge is a story of small braveries and the quiet strength found in honouring those we love. * Freya Bromley, author of The Tidal Year *Thundery at Times announces Katie Carr as a terrific writer on her own terms. Having continued her brother’s journey and book in the beautiful Moderate Becoming Good Later, here she sets out on the next epic series of voyages, revealing herself to be not only resilient, determined and courageous, but possessing a rare ability to distil those qualities into exquisite prose. Thundery at Times is a profound depiction of the long tail of grief, but most of all it is a voyage into the best of humanity and how it can be found in the remotest of locations. Like the Shipping Forecast itself, Thundery at Times is quirky and eccentric but underpinned by extraordinary heart and substance. A remarkable book. More, please. * Charlie Connelly, author of Attention All Shipping *A beautifully written and inspiring book. This is an emotional adventure which invited me on sea kayaking journeys like no others. Katie writes with candour about loss, eventual understanding and connection. It was a privilege to share her odyssey through her wonderful prose. * Nick Ray, expedition sea kayaker and author *
