What They're Saying
Critics Review
‘A book for those who love growing their own fruit, want to learn how to do it or do it better. It covers it all, from where to start, what to look for, what is suitable for your area, how to prep, how to look after and train - you name it, it is in here. A must have, and a keeper.’ – Fiona Eadie, author of 100 Best Native Plants for New Zealand Gardens‘I wish this book had been available when I started my fruit growing journey! I’ll be the book I recommend to people starting out – it’s highly engaging and exceptionally helpful. I can see worn edges from endlessly coming off the shelf to be consulted and re-read.’ - David Whyte, president Treecrops Association NZ 2018 - 2025
About The Author
Kath Irvine
For most of their gardening lives Kath and Jason have gardened in very different environments, Kath in the lower north island and Jason in the lower south. The book is all the richer for it.
Kath Irvine is an organic gardener, author, and longtime advocate for edible gardens. She’s been teaching food growing to Kiwi gardeners for 25 years. Easy-to-understand, low-cost, simple strategies are her specialty, so that anyone in any situation can grow their own food. She is the author of two bestsellers – Pruning Fruit Trees: A Beginner’s Guide and The Edible Backyard.
Jason Ross runs Habitate, a coastal Otago nursery specialising in heritage fruit trees and edible landscape design. With a Fine Arts degree and decades of hands-on horticulture experience, he blends creativity with a deep love of nature to create thriving, resilient food gardens. His two beautifully designed wall charts – Orchard Planner and Vegetable Growing Calendar – have been in print since 2001, and are trusted tools for home growers.
