What They're Saying
Critics Review
‘This beautifully illustrated picture book might be for younger readers, but it’s as fiercely political as it is personal … Where is passionate without being bitter, and illustrates in an accessible way what it means for people to be constantly asked about heritage … If this is what Collins wrote when they were 14, they are a voice to look out for.’ Spectrum, Sydney Morning Herald‘Everyone [should] read this beautiful poetic prose and … lose oneself not only within the words but within the magnificent illustrations that speak to us on every page. A triumph.’ Good Reading‘The haunting words call for immediate recital … accompanied by some amazing art by Phil Lesnie, making the complete package a definite page turner.’ Weekend Australian
About The Author
Jordan Collins
Jordan Collins was born in Chicago, United States, and moved to Australia at the age of eight. They currently reside in Sydney. Jordan’s childhood aspirations were varied, including becoming a doctor, vet, artist, or marine biologist, but their passion for reading ultimately led them to pursue a career as an author. Jordan identifies as African-American-Greek-Australian and has dark skin and curly hair.
Where? originated as a slam poem written by Jordan in response to a lifetime of questions about their heritage, such as “where are you from?” They first performed this poem at the Poet’s Picnic at the age of fourteen. Where? has since been adapted into Jordan’s debut picture book, with illustrations by acclaimed artist Phil Lesnie.
Phil Lesnie is a Sydney-based illustrator specializing in children’s books, and also works as a children’s bookseller. Their artistic process often involves watercolour, and sometimes digital work on an iPad. They have a habit of accidentally using a two-finger tap to undo actions on wet paintings. Phil’s picture book Feathers was short-listed for the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards, and their first three books were recognized as CBCA Notable Books in 2015, 2016, and 2018. However, their first cat, Cassidy, is considered notable at all times.
