Educated at St Paul’s School, London and St Edmund Hall, Oxford, Sir John Palmer was a skilled sailor, gaining a Blue. After his war-service, he became a solicitor, rising to become President of the Law Society of England and Wales 1978-79. Knighted for his services, he lives near Tiverton, Devon.
