About The Author

John Milton

John Milton (1608-1674) was born into a middle-class family in 17th century Britain. He was a poet and man of letters who got involved in the radical politics of his time. He championed the cause of the Puritans and served in Oliver Cromwell’s government. In 1651, he went blind. When Charles II was restored to the throne of England in 1660, Milton was arrested. However, he was soon released to live the rest of his life in seclusion, where he was able to create some of his greatest work.

Gustave Doré (1832-1883) was a French artist and illustrator who worked primarily with wood-engraving. His famed illustrations include those for Milton’s Paradise Lost, Dante’s Divine Comedy and Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven.
