Meet Perky, a little plucky pigeon who loves to sing! She has a big dream of being a rock star but she never gets taken seriously. With the support of her best friend Speckle, she keeps pursuing her dream and one day meets a fellow musician who recognises her talents... A heartwarming story that teaches children about inclusivity, perseverance and teamwork.
This is captivatingly original story and should enthral children who are just starting to read by themselves, but who appreciate lovely, colourful illustrations to bring life to the text. Perky is a little pigeon who has an ambition to become part of a band. There are twists and turns to her amusing attempts to join in with other musicians, but the resilient little bird does not give up and eventually achieves her goal.Children who enjoy being read to will love the story too. There are lots of little talking points which an adult might wish to dwell on, and no doubt there will be questions. The vocabulary is not at all childish and there will be words that are new to younger readers, such as ‘mesmerised’, ‘melodies’ and ‘acoustic’. The story will draw children into the world of musicians with mentions of busking and the hope of a ‘number one hit’.There is an undoubted message in the story. Some may doubt the achievability of Perky’s dreams, with the advice given that she should focus on something more achievable. Speckle, Perky’s best friend, however, will not allow Perky to become discouraged and convinces her to carry on and not to give up her dream. Now it would be a spoiler to say what happens when Perky meets Hailey the Human – you will need to read the book to find out! There is plenty of humour here as well as the message that you should never give up on your dreams, and that true friends support each other, come what may. And the book is also a lovely little entry into the world of music and musicians. I loved it! -- Sian Jones @
