Critics Review

“The story of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Phoenix is not only an amazing and interesting chronicle of one of the largest SVdP organizations worldwide, but it is also a lesson that every nonprofit leader should study to understand the power of bold new thinking and inspired leadership in growing their organizations. Jeremy Beer takes this important story and brings it to life in this great new book.” – John Berry, SSVP Global Foundation
“Having served in and consulted with numerous nonprofits, I’m always struck by the difference in success among those with an attitude of abundance and a willingness to go big. Jeremy Beer shares the story of the Virginia Piper Trust’s ‘Big Bet’ investment in capacity building and how this investment in people and process helped a nonprofit exponentially expand its impact. I pray this book will inspire others to focus more on outcomes than overhead, because at the heart of nonprofit work is the transformation of lives.” – Peter de Keratry, Institute for Catholic Philanthropy
“The Big Bet is a fascinating story of love, loyalty, generosity and continual improvement that will inspire its readers to do more for others.” – T. W. Lewis, Author, Solid Ground: Ten Proven Principles for Success
“Fundraising, at its best, is sacred work. It is about building authentic relationships, inviting people into a mission, and helping turn generosity into a force multiplier that betters lives. The Big Bet is a poignant reminder of, and insightful guide to, what can happen when courageous donors and mission-driven leaders dream boldly together, invest in one another, and never lose sight of the people they are called to serve. The lessons found within this book extend far beyond philanthropy.” – Lou Nanni, University of Notre Dame
