“The latest in a spate of books provoked by the world economic crisis and one of the best”

Guardian
The economic critique stands on its own merits The Times

Back Cover

One of the world's most brilliant economists and the bestselling author of The End of Poverty and Common Wealth , Jeffrey Sachs has written a book that is essential reading for everyone. THE PRICE OF CIVILIZATION sets out a bold and provocative, yet responsible and achievable, plan; and reveals why we must - and how we can - change our economic culture in this time of crisis. The world economy remains in a precarious state. THE PRICE OF CIVILIZATION takes a holistic view of the economic crisis, looking at macroeconomics, globalization, politics, social psychology, and the natural environment. Sachs shows how government, business and citizens alike can find common ground - on holding the corporate sector to account, strengthening and decentralising social services, and taxing the super-rich - on ways to achieve our shared goals of efficiency, equity and sustainability. He bids each of us to accept the price of civilization, so that together we solve pressing global challenges. Sparing no-one but potentially benefiting us all, THE PRICE OF CIVILIZATION is a masterful roadmap for prosperity, a programme designed to bridge divides and provide a way forward that we - and our leaders - ignore at our peril.
