Critics Review
This review is published by Doody Enterprises, Inc.Score: 98 5 StarsReviewer Samuel Chmell, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine) Description The first edition of this book on reconstructive hip surgery, published in 2005, was popular and well-received. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and The Hip Society decided it was time for this update, to be used by surgeons to enhance their ability to plan and proceed with a specific surgical technique or manage a difficult clinical problem. Included is online access to streaming videos referenced in selected chapters.Purpose The purpose is to provide a resource surgeons can use to quickly prepare for a particular operative procedure. The online surgical videos enhance the delivery of the material. Audience The intended audience is surgeons, fellows, and residents engaged in performing complex hip reconstructive surgery. The authors are credible authorities in their respective areas. Features Each chapter contains photographs, illustrations, diagrams, and radiographs that highlight critical aspects of a surgical technique and/or management strategies. Because the book is primarily a surgical guide, there are few references. There are five sections: primary total hip arthroplasty, complex total hip arthroplasty, complications, revision, and alternative reconstruction procedures. The chapter on total hip arthroplasty in patients with Paget’s disease, by Dr. Sharon Walton et al., is particularly well done and helpful in the challenging instances cited.Assessment This is an expensive book, but worth it for those who engage in complex difficult hip surgeries. This is particularly true with regard to somewhat unusual entities like Paget’s disease. This is an essential addition to the academic medical library frequented by those who need up-to-date information on complex hip surgery. A significant amount of information has been added since the first edition.
