Janie B. Butts
Janie B. Butts is a retired Professor at The University of Southern Mississippi College of Nursing in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She taught classroom and online nursing courses at the doctoral, master’s, and baccalaureate levels, covering subjects such as ethics, legal issues, advanced theory, advanced practice issues, professional development, research, and professional nursing practice. Dr. Butts served as a Consultant Editor for the international journal Nursing Ethics from 2008 to 2014. Her current research interests include ethical issues surrounding death and dying.
Dr. Butts has co-authored two books with Dr. Rich: Nursing Ethics: Across the Curriculum and Into Practice (4th edition) and Philosophies and Theories for Advanced Nursing Practice (2nd edition). Her published journal articles and book chapters address topics in ethics, her research, theory, education, and professional issues. She also reviews for nursing journals. Dr. Butts earned her Ph.D. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with an emphasis in nursing education and nursing science, and her master’s degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, with an emphasis in adult health nursing and nursing management.
Karen L. Rich
Karen L. Rich is a retired Associate Professor at The University of Southern Mississippi College of Nursing in Long Beach, Mississippi. She taught population-focused nursing, law and ethics, professional development, and leadership. Dr. Rich holds a doctoral degree in nursing with an emphasis in ethics from The University of Southern Mississippi. She also has a master’s in public health nursing from Louisiana State University and a post-master’s in psychiatric–mental health nursing, with a nurse practitioner emphasis, from The University of Southern Mississippi.
Dr. Rich serves as a Consultant Editor for the international journal Nursing Ethics and is a member of the ethics committee of a large county hospital in Gulfport, Mississippi. She has authored numerous articles and book chapters on ethics and philosophy. Her specific interests include communitarian ethics, virtue ethics, ethics in public health, Eastern philosophy and ethics, and ethics in nursing education and leadership.
