Summary

Eighth-grader Emma Macintyre is mourning the loss of her aunt Jenny and struggling to keep her own best friend from drifting away when she receives a mysterious letter telling her to write a list of ten lucky things she wants to happen. The note promises that by the end of the month her luck will change and she will get everything she wants. But could it be true? At first, Emma’s luck does seem to be changing—she gets a great role in the school play, and her mom surprises her with a new phone. But before long, things take a turn for the worst. In the end, Emma learns that luck is not a thing that happens to you; it is everything that happens to you.

Critics Review

An ILA Young Adult Reader’s List Selection!

“With so many different subplots, a wide variety of readers will find this story relatable. The consistent reminders about the letter keep the story moving forward and create an irresistible page-turner. This story reminds readers that even the worst day of your life may lead to the luckiest little thing.” –School Library Journal

“Erlbaum’s first book for young readers is freshly voiced, modern, and accessible … Books that speak directly to the experiences of upper middle-schoolers are rare these days, often falling into the gap between middle grade and YA. A refreshingly honest look at the true meaning of luck.” –Booklist

“The savagery of middle school social dynamics will resonate …it offers a positive message that in life, good and bad come together.” –Kirkus Reviews
