James Patrick Kelly, the author of Planet of Whispers and the co-author, with John Kessel, of Freedom Beach has been nominated for both the Nebula and Hugo awards for his short fiction. "He is a columnist for "Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine "and serves as chair of the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts. He lives in Nottingham, New Hampshire.
