Julia Phillippi, PhD, CNM, FACNM, FAAN
Julia Phillippi holds a PhD, is a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM), and is a Fellow of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (FACNM) and the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). She earned her bachelor of arts degree from Maryville College, a master of science degree from Vanderbilt University, and a PhD in nursing from the University of Tennessee Knoxville.
Dr. Phillippi has extensive experience in midwifery practice, teaching, and research, having provided midwifery services in homes, birth centers, and hospitals across both rural and urban settings. She has dedicated 17 years to midwifery education and currently serves as a Professor of Nursing at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. Her research has received funding from prominent organizations such as the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and the National Institute of Nursing Research.
Her work has been published in various perinatal journals, and she has presented at numerous midwifery and health services conferences. Dr. Phillippi’s achievements have been recognized with awards including the American College of Nurse-Midwives Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award, the Kitty Ernst Award, March of Dimes of Middle Tennessee Nurse Researcher of the Year, and Outstanding Peer Reviewer and Best Review Article from the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health. Since 2019, she has served as an associate editor for the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health. She is a fellow of both the American College of Nurse-Midwives and the American Academy of Nursing.
Ira Kantrowitz-Gordon, PhD, CNM, FACNM, FAAN
Ira Kantrowitz-Gordon is a PhD-educated Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM), and a Fellow of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (FACNM) and the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). He earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from Brown University, a bachelor of science degree in nursing and a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Washington, and a PhD in nursing from Washington State University.
With many years of experience in midwifery practice, teaching, and research, Dr. Kantrowitz-Gordon has been a midwifery educator for 14 years. He currently holds the position of Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of Washington School of Nursing. His research interests include mindfulness interventions during pregnancy and early parenting, reducing the stigma associated with perinatal opioid use disorder, and enhancing workforce diversity within midwifery and biomedical science.
His publications can be found in midwifery, nursing, and multidisciplinary journals. Dr. Kantrowitz-Gordon has received accolades such as the American College of Nurse-Midwives Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award and Outstanding Peer Reviewer from the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health. He has served as a deputy editor for the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health since 2021 and is a member of the Maternal Mortality Review Panel for Washington State. He is a fellow of both the American College of Nurse-Midwives and the American Academy of Nursing.
