IAN BUXTON is a naval architect who was reader in Marine Transport at the School of Marine Science and Technology at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne from 1974-2002. The British Shipbuilding database of 80,000 British-built ships has been his major focus in recent years. He has written numerous articles dealing with technical shipping issues.
