About The Author

H.P. Lovecraft

About the Author

H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) was born and lived most of his life in Providence, Rhode Island. While he began his writing career with essays and poems, Lovecraft later shifted his focus to horror stories. His prolific contributions to the pulp magazine Weird Tales, starting in 1923, became the primary venue for his fiction. Despite a relatively small body of work—comprising three short novels and approximately sixty short stories—Lovecraft’s writing has exerted a significant influence on later supernatural fiction. He is widely recognized as the foremost American author of supernatural fiction in the twentieth century.

S. T. Joshi is a freelance writer and editor renowned for his extensive work on H. P. Lovecraft and supernatural fiction. He has curated comprehensive editions of Lovecraft’s collected fiction, essays, and poetry. Joshi is also the author of several notable works, including The Weird Tale (1990), The Modern Weird Tale (2001), and Unutterable Horror: A History of Supernatural Fiction (2012). His award-winning biography, H. P. Lovecraft: A Life (1996), was later expanded into I Am Providence: The Life and Times of H. P. Lovecraft (2010). Furthermore, he has prepared Penguin Classics editions of works by Arthur Machen, Lord Dunsany, Algernon Blackwood, M. R. James, and Clark Ashton Smith, and edited the anthology American Supernatural Tales (2007).
