Summary

Unearthing Earth’s Secrets: Glacially Triggered Faulting

Glacially triggered faulting describes the movement of pre-existing faults, sparked by the interplay of tectonic forces and glacially induced isostatic stresses. While the most prominent fault scarps reside in northern Europe, long thought to be reactivated at the close of deglaciation, this understanding is evolving. Advanced techniques like LiDAR have unveiled new faults worldwide, and fault activity dating reveals multiple …

About The Author

Holger Steffen

Holger Steffen is a geophysicist by training who joined the Geodetic Infrastructure Department at Lantmäteriet, the Swedish Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registration Authority in 2012 after working for several years as a postdoctoral researcher at universities in Germany, Canada and Sweden. His work deals with glacial isostatic adjustment modelling, and corresponding acquisition and/or analysis of geodetic, geophysical and geologic observations. He chairs the Working Group of Geodynamics and Earth Observation of the Nordic Geodetic Commission.

Odleiv Olesen is a senior researcher at the Geological Survey of Norway with forty years professional experience including management roles, extensive research and mapping activities. He has taught as an Adjunct Professor in Applied Geophysics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Raimo Sutinen is a geo-consultant with forty years’ experience in geoscience. He was previously a senior researcher at the Geological Survey of Finland where he managed the project ‘Postglacial Faults’. He has more than sixty impact and 100 proceedings papers in remote sensing, soil physics and biogeochemistry. His recent research has focused on faults and earthquake-induced landforms.
