Description

Passion and Power is about Harriet Cohen’s life and career as a divorce attorney in the male-dominated legal world, from the early 1930’s to today.

Harriet graduated from law school in 1974 on the cusp of the “divorce revolution” and she was an active participant at the table where the laws were being written. Through a vivid retelling of some of her most interesting and provocative cases, Harriet gives candid insight into the divorce process: how the good or bad intention of legislators and lobbyists, the imperatives of lawyers, imperial power of judges, and the weight of a system that often rewards bad behavior and irrational decision-making impacts the clients trying to navigate their way to a new life. Many cases are discussed and analyzed, while four cases are examined in depth, all drawn from Harriet’s practice, and feature encounters with celebrities, notable judges, and legal adversaries. She is equally honest about the business side—the financial cost and psychological burden these proceedings impose on families.
