Sir Hugh Beaver, the then managing director of the Guinness Brewery, initiated the concept for The Guinness Book of Records in 1951 after a dispute during a shooting party about the fastest game bird in Europe. He hypothesized that a book providing answers to such questions would be well-received, and his intuition proved correct.
Norris and Ross McWhirter, who managed a fact-finding agency in London, were tasked with compiling the book. The inaugural edition was published on August 27, 1955, and quickly rose to the top of the British bestseller charts by Christmas of that same year.
Guinness World Records has since evolved into a globally recognized brand and the foremost authority on world records. Its commitment to the comprehensive and authentic collection, verification, accreditation, and presentation of record data is unparalleled.
