What They're Saying
Critics Review
“Poetic … Morgan’s portrait of musicianship as a spiritual concern is resonant and convincing, and she tempers it with candid discussions of the indignities of life on tour. It’s a must for music lovers.” – Publishers Weekly
“Greta Morgan’s quiet elegance grows from her embrace of her vulnerability and ability to open herself to pain and renewal. Her incandescent voice fills The Lost Voice with a radiant beauty.” – No Depression
“This book explores the disorientation and grief that arise from losing a core aspect of one’s identity. Greta enchants–she turns her worst nightmare into an exploration of what it means to live richly in a time when all of us are losing everything faster than we can count.” – Holly Whitaker, New York Times-bestselling author of Quit Like a Woman
“A luminous meditation on how loss and change can be a pathway towards unexpected beauty and inner peace.” – Jim James, lead singer of My Morning Jacket
“Greta’s writing is as life affirming as the canyons and valleys it chronicles. The Lost Voice brims with warmth, wit, and hard-won insight into what it is to find your true self against all odds. Her voice is one well worth listening to.” – Lola Kirke, author of Wild West Village
“For anyone who has given it all for a dream, Greta Morgan’s The Lost Voice is a remarkable journey through an artist’s grief and ultimate transformation. This is a story of the durable alchemy of the creative impulse and the possibilities of connection.” – Tracy O’Neill, author of Woman of Interest
“The Lost Voice is a brave, honest look at what it means for a professional singer to lose their voice and be forced to make meaning out of what a human voice truly is, and how best to use it. Greta’s story is a cautionary tale, and ultimately, a story of courage and tenacity, a hero’s journey of confronting a terrifying trial, overcoming it, gaining wisdom, and returning home changed and ready to share what’s been hard learned. Gorgeously written, this book is for anyone who is interested in the creative process, spiritual growth, self discovery, and transcendence.” – Mary Gauthier, Grammy-winning songwriter and author of Saved by a Song
“A dazzling debut. Morgan’s memoir reminds us that song and writing share a common root in lyrical storytelling. Her prose manages to be both lushly poetic and astoundingly precise, as it documents the self-inquiry and uncertainties involved in navigating illness, loss, and the demands of a creative life.” – Sophie Strand, author of The Body Is a Doorway and The Madonna Secret
