Critic Reviews

Reviewed by Shrabastee Chakraborty for Readers' Favorite

The strange blue haze that gives Blue Island its name also hides a dangerous secret. People who have dared to venture there never return. Tall tales of ferocious wolf monsters have riddled the inhabitants of the nearest town, Grantham, with fear. As Mrs. Ashley prepares her fifth-grade class for a school trip to the island, her son Elliot accompanies her. Her daughter, Skylar, offers to volunteer in the hopes of spending more time with her new crush. Tucker, Elliot's estranged friend from the past, also joins the trip so the duo can reunite. They are oblivious to the danger lurking in the shadows of the trees, eagerly stalking them. To find out what happens next, read Drink the Blood, a horror novel by Gregory Saur.

I loved how the book kept me on my toes the entire time. The atmospheric tone complemented the imagery of horrific monsters preying on hapless children roaming around the deadly island. The relentless pursuit by the wolfmen made me feel like I was trapped in a never-ending nightmare. As the secrets gradually unfolded, I realized the enormity of the sinister plans that were at play. Although a horror novel at its heart, Drink the Blood nonetheless encompasses more profound themes. Highlighting the grey zone that separates good from evil, Gregory Saur makes us question who should be called a monster. Evil could manifest not only as bloodthirsty brutes but also as a corrupt man bartering his students' lives for personal gain. When faced with unimaginable horror, a strict teacher could become a staunch protector of her beloved students while two kids are ready to sacrifice themselves for each other. Testing the strengths of friendship and family bonds repeatedly, Drink the Blood is a perfect read for the spooky season.

About the Author

Gregory Saur is the author of Drowning Hate, Best Shot Forward, and many other novels for younger readers. He has a fear of the dark, blood, wolf-men, and pretty much anything that scares him... which makes perfect sense. He is not afraid of boldly going where nobody has ever gone before, just as long as he does it in his imagination. You can rarely find him on Facebook, but he will probably ignore you if you do. He is afraid of people, too.
