Critic Reviews

“"Five stars. This book is extremely emotional, heart-rendering and gut-wrenching. It certainly draws you into the story of a woman who has been mentally abused over many years in her marriage. The mental torture and mind-gruelling name calling will bring a lump to your throat or a punch of anger to sit heavily in your stomach. Fabulously written!" L. Grubb Southampton, United Kingdom. Author of the best-selling 'Crusaders MC' series. "It is not life threatening when someone is screaming at you. At least they aren't hitting you." "I have endured the forty questions every time you leave and come home, sitting in fear as you are interrogated, wondering if today the words I chose will be the right ones, or will I manage not to blink too much. I fell down the rabbit hole of 'her' story and I walked beside 'her' through each word. Every time I read "my ex" my heart squeezed in triumph for us all, it screams of a strength louder than the battle cries of old. By the end, I could see those brown eyes, I could see into her hell. I cried with frustration and anger, I reveled in her triumphs, her rebellions and her strength. Her story is one of immense pain, but her spirit shines through. I am her, she is me. Thank you for giving us a voice. Who knew it was a sin just to breathe?" Fionnuala Cullen Belfast, Northern Ireland. "I can hear her voice telling the story. Genuine, real, authentic truth telling. Totally captivated my full attention at the outset of reading her story! It's giving me the courage to write my own story with no more hold backs! There is a power released in giving VOICE to truth that combats all of our "Don't Talk" rules of keeping us silent." Teresa Steele Lydon United States of America. A gripping story of how love can be betrayed by an individual who decides it's ok to abuse the very person they're meant to protect. Despite everything she suffered she dug deep and stands a strong independent woman who even though I have never met, I'm exceptionally proud of!" Trish Mulholland Belfast, Northern Ireland. "I just finished this in one sitting. I was horrified; I felt like screaming at my phone. I cringed at each awful word he called her. Greg has brought out this beautiful woman's bravery with every word. His story telling hooked me from the title of the book, as he has with all his stories. He made me feel this could easily be a work colleague, a friend or a family member. We simply don't know what goes on behind closed doors. #IAM. Thank you both of you." Siobhan McCaffrey Saskatchewan, Canada. "The author managed to capture the emancipation of one women's experience after being trapped in a one-sided loveless marriage. This story shows the strength of character of this woman and the many others who break the cycle of abuse, especially after the constant degrading verbal abuse suffered by the tongue of a man who is so weak of character that he can only feel strong when making another human being feel so low, and downtrodden. A heartfelt account which gives strength in the union of survival, empowering the next generation to be aware of the signs of potential patterns of abuse and develop the strength needed to stand tall and strong in life." Christina Moffett Belfast, Northern Ireland.”

About the Author

Irish author, poet and storyteller, Greg McVicker, was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He grew up during the heightened period of sectarian hatred and a violent, political war known as 'The Troubles' which claimed the lives of 3,700 people. At age fifteen, his parents relocated their family by way of immigration to Winnipeg, Canada. He describes this as an 'Everlasting Homesickness'. Writing unashamedly from the heart, he composes stories and narrative poems which delve into arduous topics regarding the human journey of life. He published three new books to tell his and the story of many others whom he's met. He composes his works as a social worker, drawing inspiration from his experiences and working with marginalized populations. These include: Residential Schools, Addictions, Grief, Loss and Death, Poverty, Relationships, the Sex Trade, Child Welfare, Political and Religious ideologies, Spiritual Beliefs, The Troubles, and Irish Folklore and Mythology. Now a social worker, Greg is unwavering in his efforts to shed light on various world experiences that people have in their daily lives, both individually and collectively, but are often left to suffer in silence. Although Greg obtained his social work degree at the University of Manitoba, along with his minor degree in Native Studies, much of his work focuses on advocating for and improving the lives of Canada's Indigenous population, specifically the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) within the province of Manitoba. He works as a Supervisor in the field of child and family services. Greg does several speaking engagements within the United States of America based on his experiences and memories of growing up during 'The Troubles' within Northern Ireland's dark history. In addition to this, Greg is branching out and is currently narrating and producing the audio versions of his books which should be available soon. Recently, Greg turned his attention to scribe the true life story of a friend. Her personal memoir is a gripping, yet unsettling tale of a life trapped in an abusive marriage. This story speaks to similar experiences of thousands of others who have walked in this woman's shoes. Lastly, Greg has written and produced awareness videos for both Pandemic Preparedness and HIV Prevention. He is seeking to move his latest book, 'At Least He Wasn't Hitting You...' into screenplay production whereby he will act the role of the main male character.
