Imaging of the Pharynx and the Esophagus

Giovanni Fontanella, MD FRSA MBSImPc, is an Abdominal and Gastrointestinal Consultant Radiologist based in Benevento, Italy at the Sacro Cuore di Gesù - Fatebenefratelli Hospital. He graduated from Vanvitelli University in Naples, Italy, a leading institution for gastrointestinal imaging. His expertise in GI and abdominal imaging was further honed at St. Mark’s Hospital in London, United Kingdom.

In Benevento, Dr. Fontanella combines clinical practice with research, focusing on the continuous testing, innovation, and optimization of imaging techniques for clinical application. He is currently developing gel-enhanced MR Fistulography, a technique he pioneered and implemented in routine clinical use at the Fatebenefratelli Hospital. His research also encompasses Morphodynamic Imaging techniques for pharyngo-oesophageal motility diseases and Virtual Colonoscopy.

Dr. Fontanella has authored over 40 publications, predominantly in GI imaging, including the book ‘Morphodynamic Imaging in Achalasia’. He has presented his work at numerous international radiology conferences, such as the European Congress of Radiology (ECR), Congress of the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Imaging (ESGAR), and the Annual Radiology Meeting in Dubai. He serves as a reviewer for several radiology journals, including the European Journal of Radiology and Clinical Case Reports.

He is an active member of various international radiology societies, including the European Society of Radiology, European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Imaging, British Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Imaging, Radiological Society of North America, and the Korean Society of Radiology. He also organizes GI-themed seminars for the Radiological Society of the Emirates. In 2021, Dr. Fontanella was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in London. In 2023, he was recognized as a registered clinician for the Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile.
