George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff (1877-1949)
Born in Alexandropol and trained in Kars as both a priest and physician, George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff embarked on extensive travels throughout the remotest regions of Central Asia and the Middle East. He began gathering pupils in Moscow prior to the First World War and continued his work while on the move. His journey took him from Essentuki in the Caucasus, through Tiflis, Constantinople, Berlin, and London, ultimately leading him to the Ch teau du Prieur near Paris. There, in 1922, he reopened his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man on a larger scale.
The narrative of his persistent quest for genuine and universal knowledge, along with the articulation of his profound ideas, is chronicled in his principal works:
- Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson
- Meetings with Remarkable Men
- Life is Real Only Then, When ‘I am’
- Views from the Real World
