About The Author
Gary Knapp
Gary Knapp (Nunngoorie)
Gary Knapp, also known as Nunngoorie, is an Elder and traditional healer. He was born in 1956 at the Aboriginal reserve in Ngowanjerindj (Gnowangerup), in the southwest of Western Australia on Noongar country. His mother was Ngadju and Wongi and his father was from the western desert, with family connections throughout central Australia.
Nunngoorie was removed from his family and placed at Roelands Mission as a child. He went on to give evidence for the Bringing them Home Report detailing his treatment there. After gaining his independence from the state of Western Australia, Nunngoorie went on a journey of self-discovery, becoming a powerful traditional healer and an advocate for survivors of institutional abuse and removal.
Margaret O Brien
Margaret O Brien retired from a long nursing career in 2011 to pursue her passion for ospreys. Her life took a new direction in 2014, when she met Noongar woman Mrs Helen (Ing) Nellie, who invited O Brien to become her biographer. This partnership led to the publication of Simply Ing by Magabala Books in 2018.
In 2016, while Mrs Nellie’s book was still in progress, O Brien was introduced to Gary Knapp, known as Nunngoorie. In early 2021, she began collaborating with him to bring his extraordinary life story to light. With this biography now complete, O Brien is eager to return to her work on ospreys.
