About The Author

Frederick William Winterbotham CBE

Frederick William Winterbotham, born on 16 April 1897, was educated at Oxford University. In the First World War he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, but was shot down over the Western Front in 1917, spending the rest of the war in captivity. Early in 1930, Winterbotham joined the Air Staff and was officially assigned a role as a liaison officer; unofficially he served in the Air Department of the British Secret Service. On the outbreak of the Second World War, he established a new organisation for the translation, distribution and security of Ultra at Bletchley Park. In 1943 he was awarded the CBE, and attained the rank of Group Captain. He died of natural causes on 28 January 1990, aged 92.
