Animal photographer Fred Levy was with his own dog in the local dog park when he first heard about “Black Dog Syndrome,” the phenomenon that black dogs are frequently the first dogs to be euthanized and the last dogs to be adopted in rescue shelters. After talking with shelters all across the country, he quickly learned that this was not just a random phenomenon. It was an epidemic. With camera in hand, Levy decided to showcase the beauty and tenderness of black dogs everywhere. His photo series became known as “The Black Dogs Project,” and awareness of this condition in shelters has grown.
