About The Author

Eric Hill

Eric Hill OBE (1927-2014)

Eric Hill was the creator of the beloved children’s character Spot the puppy. He began his artistic journey as an art studio messenger, later transitioning to a career as a cartoonist and eventually serving as an art director at a prominent advertising agency.

In 1978, while telling his son a bedtime story, Eric created a tale about a small puppy, and thus, Spot was born. His interactive children’s book, Where’s Spot?, was published in 1980. This pioneering work featured a lift-the-flap format, a simple narrative, and endearing, quirky illustrations. The book’s immediate success inspired Eric to dedicate himself to full-time authorship. Since then, Spot books have been cherished by children globally, accompanied by a wide array of adaptations including audiobooks, animations, toys, and games.
