About The Author
Ellie Herman
Ellie Herman, a gymnast and athlete in her youth, transitioned from dance to Pilates after an injury in 1988. She received a BA in Peace and Conflict Studies from UC Berkeley, where she explored the representation of women’s bodies in American society through dance. After graduating in 1987, she moved to San Francisco and co-founded the Flying Buttresses performance troupe. She later choreographed for Elbows Akimbo and danced with the Japanese butoh company Harupin-Ha. In 1991, she established Ellie Herman and Company, a dance troupe that received critical acclaim. In 1993, Ellie founded Ellie Herman Studios in San Francisco, which has since expanded through her Pilates instructor training and certification programs.
