Summary
Among the oldest of India’s spiritual texts, the Upanishads are records of intensive question-and-answer sessions given by illumined sages to their students - in ashrams, at family gatherings, in a royal court, and in the kingdom of Death. The sages share flashes of insight, extraordinary visions, the results of their investigation into consciousness itself. The Upanishads have puzzled and inspired wisdom seekers from Yeats to Schopenhauer.

What They're Saying
Critics Review
“No one in modern times is more qualified – no, make that ‘as qualified’ – to translate the epochal Classics of Indian Spirituality than Eknath Easwaran. And the reason is clear. It is impossible to get to the heart of those classics unless you live them, and he did live them. My admiration of the man and his works is boundless.” – Huston Smith, author of The World’s Religions
About The Author
Eknath Easwaran
Eknath Easwaran (1910-1999) possessed a unique blend of qualifications. He was steeped from childhood in one of India’s most authentic Sanskrit traditions, granting him an intimate understanding of his Hindu heritage. Simultaneously, he held a profound appreciation for Western literature and served as the chairman of the English department at a prominent Indian university before coming to the United States on a Fulbright fellowship in 1959.
From the 1960s onward, Easwaran conducted classes on mysticism and practical spirituality for a predominantly American audience. As an accomplished teacher, he adeptly addressed the potential challenges Western readers might encounter with the core concepts of Indian spiritual classics, explaining them with remarkable clarity and profound simplicity.
In 1961, Easwaran established the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation in California. In 1967, he initiated the first academic course for credit on meditation at the University of California, Berkeley, a pioneering offering at a major American university. For nearly four decades, he continued to teach passage meditation and his eight-point program for spiritual living to audiences in America and internationally. His books on meditation and world mysticism have been translated into numerous languages.
Easwaran found enduring inspiration in the Upanishads and other Indian spiritual classics. As Huston Smith observed, “it is impossible to get to the heart of those Classics unless you live them, and he did live them.”
Through the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation and its publishing house, Nilgiri Press, Easwaran’s teachings continue to reach an expanding global audience through publications and retreats.
