About The Author

Edmund Gosse

Sir Edmund William Gosse (1849-1928) was the son of naturalist Philip Henry Gosse and poet Emily Bowes. Raised within the Plymouth Brethren, Gosse later explored the conflict between his upbringing and Darwin’s theory of evolution, a theme central to his 1907 biography, Father and Son. A poet, critic, and librarian of the House of Lords, Gosse significantly influenced the early 20th-century art world and introduced Ibsen’s works to English-speaking audiences. He was knighted in 1925.
