Dr Mark A. Williams
Mark is an internationally recognised professor of cognitive neuroscience with over 25 years of experience in behavioural and brain imaging research. He has taught at MIT and leading Australian universities, published more than 70 scientific articles, and received prestigious awards, including the CJ Martin and Queen Elizabeth II Fellowships.
Mark’s journey to academic success was far from typical. Raised in a small Victorian town, he struggled in school and only returned to education at 25, rapidly rising to prominence in his field. His groundbreaking research spans brain plasticity, autism, dementia, and face blindness, while he’s pioneered computational brain imaging and the use of virtual reality in science.
Now focused on making neuroscience accessible to the public, Mark runs programs on the neuroscience of learning, emotions, and the impact of modern technology on our brains. Mark’s insights have been featured widely in the media, from how we process emotions to why we can’t tickle ourselves. Mark’s first book, The Connected Species, was published in the US by Rowman & Littlefield and received rave reviews, including from Publishers’ Weekly, which stated: ‘In his eye-opening debut, cognitive neuroscientist Williams argues that humans’ “primitive drive to connect” has shaped “our behavior over millions of years” and that better understanding this impulse can make for a “less divided” future. Pop psychology fans should take note.’
Mark is based on the Northern Beaches of Sydney and plans to write more books in the popular psychology space in the future.
