Neo-Latin contexts in Croatia and Tyrol: challenges, prospects, case studies

Research during the last decades has demonstrated the critical importance of Neo-Latin literature for the formation of cultural identities on both a European, as well as on a national and regional level, especially in those parts of Europe which have not previously been at the centre of scholarly interest. The studies collected in this volume explore different aspects of the Neo-Latin literature in Croatia and Tyrol from the Renaissance to the dawn of modernity. Their interests range from the interpretation of individual genres or periods, to comparison of the two literatures and evaluation of the very concepts of national and regional literature in the field of Neo-Latin studies. It is the first volume published in English to examine either Croatian or Tyrolean Latinity to such an extent.

Luka Špoljarić is an intellectual historian of the Renaissance whose research explores the diffusion of humanism across the Adriatic. He held fellowships at Villa I Tatti, University of Zagreb, Harvard University and the Warburg Institute. Lav Šubariæ (1971, Zagreb) studierte Klassische Philologie in Innsbruck mit kürzeren Aufenthalten in London und Hamburg. Seit 2000 ist er Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Universität Innsbruck und forscht auf den Gebieten Handschriftenkunde, Mittel- und Neulatein. Der Schwerpunkt seiner Projekte liegt auf der Kultur- und Literaturgeschichte des historischen Tiroler Raumes sowie auf den Prozessen der nationalen Identitätsbildung im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert. Seit 2011 forscht er auch im Rahmen des Ludwig Boltzmann Instituts für Neulateinische Studien. Neven Jovanović is associate professor at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Classical Philology. His research interests are Croatian Neo-Latin literature and application of digital methods to philology. Florian Schaffenrath (1978, Innsbruck) studierte Klassische Philologie in Heidelberg, Innsbruck in Siena. Nach verschiedenen Projektanstellungen und einem Forschungsjahr am Österreichischen Historischen Institut in Rom wurde er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter und später Assistenz-Professor am Institut für Sprachen und Literaturen der Universität Innsbruck. Seit 2011 ist er stellvertretender Leiter des Ludwig Boltzmann Institutes für Neulateinische Studien. Martin Korenjak (1971, Wels) studierte Klassische Philologie und Sprachwissenschaft in Innsbruck und Heidelberg. In der Folge arbeitete er als Assistent an der Universität Innsbruck und als Professor an der Universität Bern, bevor er 2009 nach Innsbruck zurückkehrte. Gegenwärtig ist er dort teilweise am Fachbereich Klassische Philologie und teilweise am Ludwig Boltzmann Institut für Neulateinische Studien beschäftigt. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte umfassen griechische und lateinische Dichtung, Rhetorik, die Rezeption der Antike und die lateinische Literatur der Neuzeit.
