Dong Xi (1966-) is the pen name of Tian Dailin. Born in Guangxi Province, Chinese critics include him among the “New Generation” of writers. Notable works include the novels A Resounding Slap in the Face, Record of Regret and Fate Rewritten, as well as the novella Life without Language, which won the Lu Xun Literary Award. He is Writer in Residence at the Guangxi University for Nationalities. John Balcom is a translator of Chinese literature, philosophy and children's books. His translations have won numerous grants and awards, including an NEA Translation fellowship and the Northern California Book Award. Dr Balcom is Professor Emeritus at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, California and a past president of the American Literary Translators Association.
