About the Author

Derek Solomon has been birding since his school days. This passion led to a career change which saw him running bird identification courses, guiding training programs and leading special interest safaris in southern Africa for over 35 years. He has published several books on bird identification and animal behavior, including one on LBJs (Little Brown Jobs), and a behavior guide to the mammals of Zambia's South Luangwa National Park. Together with two colleagues in Zambia, he recently published a digital application, 'Birds of Zambia'. He spends much of his time recording nature sounds, including those of birds, mammals, amphibians and insects. Rory McDougall has had a passion for birding since childhood, winning his first pair of binoculars at the age of 14 in a bird-nesting data essay competition at school in Zimbabwe. Rory later graduated from the University of Cape Town with a BSc in Zoology and Botany, thereafter working as a professional wildlife and bird guide and wildlife consultant. In 2015, he founded the first wildlife safari guide training school in Zambia. He is co-author of a series of digital books covering common Zambian flora and fauna for students and the digital application Birds of Zambia.
