Dav Pilkey was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia as a child. He was often disruptive in class, leading his teachers to have him sit in the hallway. During this time, he created his own comic books, featuring the first adventures of Dog Man and Captain Underpants. In college, a teacher encouraged him to write and illustrate for children. He followed her advice and created his first book, World War Won , which won a national competition in 1986. He later received the California Young Reader Medal for Dog Breath (1994) and the Caldecott Honor for The Paperboy (1996). In 2002, Dav published his first full-length graphic novel for kids, The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby , which became a bestseller. Since then, he has published many graphic novels, including the bestselling Dog Man and Cat Kid Comic Club series. Dav’s stories are semi-autobiographical and explore themes of friendship, empathy, and the triumph of good. When not making books, Dav enjoys kayaking with his wife in the Pacific Northwest.
