About the Author

Dallas Hanson lectured in strategic management at the University of Tasmania for many years. He has wide-ranging intellectual (and scholastic) interests, including brand management, tourism, green strategy and governance. He has won teaching awards for his work in strategy and enjoys the challenge of making strategy interesting and engaging. He now advises as a strategy consultant, which continually reminds him that organisation politics matter in the world of strategy, while logic does not always win in the process of strategy implementation. Kim Backhouse has lectured in Strategic Management, law, and other business units for the past two decades in the Faculty of Business and Faculty of Law at the University of Tasmania. Kim has also facilitated units in legal and risk for the Australian Institute of Company Directors and runs short courses on governance currently through the Law School at the University of Tasmania. Kim is passionate about research and teaching in strategic management and governance and enjoyed being part of Dr Hanson’s teaching team in Strategy for many years. Dr Backhouse has published in a variety of journals on governance and corporate social responsibility. She has won teaching awards for many years for her work in strategy and organisational behaviour. Dr Backhouse also works in part-time executive roles outside of the academic landscape and consults regularly to boards on complex governance issues. Kim has a current practising certificate from the Law Society of Tasmania, Fellow of the Governance Institute of Australia and current board member of the Governance Institute of Australia (Tas). Kim currently sits on several not-for-profit boards such as ACHAT and has been sitting on various boards for the past two decades. David Leaney lectures in strategic management at post-graduate level at the Australian National University (ANU) and the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) at the University of NSW. He also lectures in marketing and global supply chain management at post-graduate and under-graduate levels. David brings a practitioner’s perspective, fuelled by his work as a management consultant and his role as the Managing Director of IT and business strategy consultancy Strategium. David is the chair of several private company Boards in professional services and technology, and advises clients in public sector, Defence, utilities, banking, and the retail sector. He is sought as a facilitator for executive workshops and the development of corporate strategy and organisational change management. David is a Fellow of the Institute of Managers and Leaders (FIML) and a Certified Management Consultant (CMC). Michael A. Hitt is a University Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Texas A&M University. Dr. Hitt received his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado. He has co-authored or co-edited 28 books and authored or co-authored numerous journal articles. A recent article lists him as one of the 10 most cited authors in management during a 25-year period and the Times Higher Education 2010 lists him among the top scholars in economics, finance and management, based on the number of highly cited articles he has authored. The Academy of Management Perspectives recognizes Dr. Hitt as one of the top two management scholars, based on the impact of his work in academia and beyond. The Academy of Management Learning and Education lists him as the highest cited author in strategic management texts. Dr. Hitt has served on the editorial review boards of multiple journals and is former editor of the Academy of Management Journal, former co-editor of the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and former editor-in-chief of Oxford Research Encyclopedia. He is a fellow in the Academy of International Business and is a fellow and former president of both the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Society and. He has received honorary doctorates (Doctor Honoris Causa) from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and from Jonkoping University. He has received awards for the best article published in the Academy of Management Executive, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management and Family Business Review. He has received the Irwin Outstanding Educator Award, the Career Achievement Award for Distinguished Service and the Career Award for Distinguished Educator from the Academy of Management. He also received Distinguished Alumnus Awards from Texas Tech University and from the University of Colorado. R. Duane Ireland is a University Distinguished Professor Emeritus in Mays Business School, Texas A&M University, where he held the Benton Cocanougher Chair in Business. He has also served in various leadership roles, including head of the Department of Management, executive associate dean, acting dean and interim dean. Dr. Ireland taught strategic management courses at all educational levels. He has more than 200 publications, including approximately 25 books. His research focuses on diversification, innovation, corporate entrepreneurship, strategic entrepreneurship and the informal economy. He also has served on multiple editorial review boards and is a former editor of the Academy of Management Journal. He is also a former consulting editor for the Academy of Management Executive, and he has been a guest editor for 13 special issues of journals. Dr. Ireland is a past president of the Academy of Management. He is a fellow of the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Society, and is a research fellow with the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers. The Academy of Management Learning and Education lists him as among the most highly cited authors in strategic management texts. He has received awards for the best article published in Academy of Management Executive, the Academy of Management Journal, and the Journal of Applied Management and Entrepreneurship. He received an Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award for Research from Texas A&M University. For five years Thomson Reuters has identified Dr. Ireland as a Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher (a list of the world’s most influential researchers). He has also received two Distinguished Service awards from the Academy of Management. Robert E. Hoskisson is the George R. Brown Emeritus Chair of Strategic Management at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business, Rice University. Dr. Hoskisson received his Ph.D. from the University of California-Irvine. His research topics focus on corporate governance, acquisitions and divestitures, corporate and international diversification and cooperative strategy. He teaches courses in corporate and international strategic management, cooperative strategy and strategy consulting. He has co-authored 34 books. Dr. Hoskisson has served on several editorial boards for such publications as the Strategic Management Journal (Associate Editor), Academy of Management Journal (Consulting Editor), Journal of International Business Studies (Consulting Editor), Journal of Management (Associate Editor), Organization Science and Journal of Management Studies (Special Issue Guest Editor). His research has appeared in more than 130 publications, including the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Journal of Management, Academy of Management Perspective, Academy of Management Executive, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Business Venturing, Leadership Quarterly, Organization Studies, Strategic Management Review, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, California Management Review and Journal of World Business. The Academy of Management Learning and Education lists him among the most highly cited authors in strategic management texts. He is also included in the Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher list that catalogues the world’s most influential research scholars. Dr. Hoskisson is a fellow of the Academy of Management and a charter member of the Academy of Management Journal’s Hall of Fame.
