Critics Review
★ “In this tale first published in China, a land receives the gift of reclamation. Based on the true story of a couple who restored land near India’s Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in the 1990s, this evocative tale of environmental rehabilitation adopts a unique narrative perspective to tremendous effect. (The) wistful text enchants, while Mello’s superb semi-abstract mixed-media artwork boasts animal silhouettes and bold colors. Sherjahaan’s references to its own body (‘my bald, wrinkled head’) and repeated images of hands personify the land, instilling respect for nature and inviting readers into conversation with the world around them. A mesmerizing saga of hope.”—Kirkus Reviews, starred review
