What They're Saying

Critics Review

“Chock-full of transportive photographs, The Gardens of Mien Ruys could be mistaken for a coffee-table book, but Conny den Hollander, the head of the Mien Ruys Gardens in the Netherlands, brings depth and expertise to the beautiful images.”–Landscape Architecture Magazine
“If you’re an aficionado of today’s modern gardens, you’ll want to know how it all began, and you’ll find out in this book.”–Garden Design Online
“Written by the head of the Mien Ruys Gardens, who continues to steward Ruys’s horticultural legacy, this is part biography and part case study.”–Gardens Illustrated
“Den Hollander delivers a comprehensive debut survey of the work of Dutch landscape and garden architect Mien Ruys…Throughout, vibrant full-page photos reveal the artistry of Ruys’s work. Garden aficionados will be inspired.”–Publishers Weekly
“Some gardens you merely visit, but Mien Ruys Gardens is more like a pilgrimage to the revolutionary birthplace of modern landscape design. It’s remarkable to think that much of what we commonly accept about western gardens today dates back to the design experiments conducted here by Mien Ruys over her long lifetime. This is where I discovered the full creative possibilities of her maxim Wild planting in a strong design, an idea that deeply inspired the original Dutch Wave and continues to be piercingly relevant today.”
Tony Spencer, The New Perennialist
