The Emergence from the Lightning Brain begins in 2233, one year after the previous novel, The Transcendental Problem, ends. After Cyberspace-based Electra revealed Erika Kincaid's legacy from the Lightning Brain, Erika needed the time to recalibrate who and what she is.

Armed with this better understanding, Erika is ready to build on her ghostwriting job for journalist Terri Tarrant, who considers Erika a gifted younger sister. Erika makes time to adopt a special infant placed at Ava's adoption agency by Indira.

The Erika-Terri partnership forges Terri's career path, taking them to places in all of the 3-D World's troubled environments, while Electra assists Erika when she needs help, and Indira the Singularity tells Electra what projects of mutual interest Erika should pursue.
