About The Author

Charlotte Bronte

Charlotte Brontë lived from 1816 to 1855. In 1824, she and her four sisters were sent to school, where they were treated so poorly that their father brought them home to Haworth in Yorkshire. The two eldest sisters died within days, and Charlotte, along with her sisters Emily and Anne, was raised in the isolated village.

They were often lonely and found solace in walking on the moors. All three were avid readers and began to write poetry and stories at a young age.

After her informal education concluded, Charlotte worked as a governess and teacher in Yorkshire and Belgium to supplement the family’s meager income and fund her brother Branwell’s art education. Charlotte was a naturally nervous young woman and struggled with extended absences from home.

The sisters began writing more seriously and published a collection of poetry in 1846 under male pseudonyms, due to significant prejudice against female authors. The book was unsuccessful, and each sister moved on to write novels. Charlotte’s most celebrated work, Jane Eyre, was published in 1847 and quickly recognized as a masterpiece, showcasing her ability to bring characters and situations vividly to life.

Charlotte’s life was marked by tragedy, most notably the deaths of her brother Branwell and sisters Emily and Anne within months of each other in 1848⁄49. She married her father’s curate in 1854 but died in 1855, before her fortieth birthday.
