About the Author

Dr. Charles R. Figley served in Vietnam with the Third Marine Amphibious Force (1965-1966). He is founder and director of the Consortium on Veteran Studies; consultant to numerous mental health research and treatment agencies including the Naval Health Research Center, Cen­ter for POW Studies, Veterans Administration, National Institute of Mental Health and the President's Commission on Mental Health; and author of numerous scientific works focusing on traumatic stress reactions, including his latest volume, Stress Disorders among Vietnam Veterans: Theory, Research and Treatment (1978). Presently Dr. Figley is an associate professor and director, Family Research Institute, Purdue University (West Lafayette, Indiana). Dr. Seymour Leventman became interested in Vietnam veterans as a special­ist in race and ethnic studies. He has written several scientific papers focusing on veterans within the context of racial identity, victimology, and classic sociological theory. He has presented papers on veterans issues at conferences of both the American Sociological Association and American Psychological Association. Presently Dr. Leventman is an associate professor of sociology at Boston College.
