Dwarf caiman crocodiles, or Paleosuchus palpebrosus as they are known by scientists, are a species of crocodilian found only in the humid forests of South America. They rank among the world's tiniest crocodile species. Key features and facts about Dwarf Caiman Crocodiles are listed below.
- Adult Dwarf Caimans usually grow to be about 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 meters) long, however some have been recorded as tall as 6 feet (1.8 meters). Unlike larger crocodiles, these reptiles are on the smaller side.
- They look like the water they live in because of their dark brown or black coloring. Their scales are like armor, shielding them from danger and protecting them from being eaten.
- Dwarf caimans are mostly aquatic and have a reputation for being elusive and reclusive due to their bashful demeanor. - To reproduce, female Dwarf Caimans construct a nest out of plant matter, and place the eggs there. The female is responsible for protecting the nest and providing care for her young once they hatch.
