Dale Carnegie was originally born Dale Carnagey in 1888. In an attempt to gain publicity for his public-speaking classes, he altered his surname to Carnegie to emulate the success of the industrialist Andrew Carnegie. Dale Carnegie had gone from being a modest Missouri-born salesman to an extremely popular motivational speaker in little more than five years. His first mainstream publication - Public Speaking: A Practical Course for Business Men - appeared in 1926, but it was How to Win Friends and Influence People that really resonated with people. He died in 1955.
