Black History

The ‘My First Heroes’ books are a great way to engage little ones in reading, by making learning about inspirational people interactive and fun. The slides to push and wheels to turn provided lots of interest and our testers liked that the stories highlighted diverse and interesting lives. The stories and facts encouraged lots of discussion and questions, which is a great way for children to build their knowledge and communication skills. The interactive features also really helped children to feel like they were participating in the story, which is great for developing empathy and learning about identity. – Dr Amanda Gummer * Dr Gummer’s Good Play Guide *This board book is designed with preschoolers in mind, with pull and slide scenes and bold, bright colours. Children can discover information about black men and women pioneers from all over the world, and be inspired by their achievements. The book, which is written by Campbell Books and illustrated by Jayri Gomez, has been recommended as part of Dr Amanda Gummer’s ‘Good Play Guide’. Poet Maya Angelou, rapper Stormzy and activist Rosa Parks will all be making a appearance in this celebration of black history. – Georgia Meadows * Chronicle Live *

Jayri Gómez is an illustrator from the Dominican Republic. She began a course in Advertising before moving to a degree in Graphic Arts. This led to her passion for illustration. Her work is influenced by children’s books, fantasy and magic. Jayri has illustrated several titles for Campbell, including My First Heroes: Black History, Busy Football and Little Superstars: Beyoncé.
