Summer Houses by the Sea

An extremely popular traditionalist style, there have been other books on Shingle Style residential architecture, perhaps most notably the author's own successful volume Shingle Styles (Abrams), which is now more than fifteen years old. Our book takes a fresh look at both major houses and little known treasures, each in its romantic seaside locale – be it Jamestown, RI, or Montauk, NY – along with its warm interior rooms and often lush landscaping and gardens. The book will appeal to those who aspire to own a Shingle Style house, and to architects and students of architecture of this famed American vernacular style.

The book features twenty-two shingle-style houses, all set in romantic settings by the sea, in all-new photography especially taken for the book. It includes early masterpieces of the style from the 18th century up to contemporary examples built within the last ten years by some of the great architects at work in the style today.

Bret Morgan is a photographer of architecture and interiors, gardens and landscapes. He turned to photography as a profession after studying architectural history with William H. Jordy at Brown University and earning a Master of Architecture degree from Columbia University. His books include Rustic: Country Houses, Rural Dwellings, Wooded Retreats (Rizzoli); Historic Houses of the Hudson River Valley (Rizzoli); Shingle Styles: Innovation and Tradition in American Architecture (Abrams); The Architecture of the Shakers (W. W. Norton); and Buildings of Nevada, a part of the comprehensive series Buildings of the United States published by the Society of Architectural Historians and Oxford University Press.
