Critics Review
PRAISE FOR BRENDAN BATEMAN
‘The narratives captured in these volumes outline the fascinating stories of these individuals from the Drummoyne and Five Dock communities. Their lives paint a picture of our local heritage and our community’s connection to the Great War, from those with deep ties to the area to others with more fleeting connections. These stories are so important … in preserving the memory of those who served.’ Councillor Michael Megna (Mayor), City of Canada Bay Council.
‘A powerful reminder of the human cost of war and the importance of remembrance. I had the honour of attending Brendan Bateman’s book launch and hearing about the incredible journey behind Drummoyne’s Great War. Brendan spent over 15 years researching the lives of the soldiers commemorated on the Drummoyne War Memorial, and this first volume, covering 1914-1916, is a deeply moving tribute to those who served and fell at Gallipoli, the Western Front, Messines, Pozières, and Mouquet Farm. His meticulous historical research brings to life the untold stories of these local heroes, some 110 years after their sacrifice. This work is more than a history book it’s a legacy. With over 300 photographs and rich contextual detail, Brendan has created a masterful and heartfelt tribute that every Australian should read.’ Amazon Reviewer
‘This masterfully written, three-volume work chronicles the lives of the ninety-five men commemorated on the Drummoyne War Memorial who served and died in the First World War. The stories of these soldiers, told in the order in which they died, follow the narrative arch of Australia’s involvement in the Great War providing a unique contextual depth.
I loved this read - Brendan has brought the stories of these men to life with a deep respect. I personally felt I was related and living this time with them. It was a touching insight to what families and each person involved experienced. Thank you, Brendan, for bringing this to life.’ Goodreads 5-star review
‘This is a moving well-written and researched book which I greatly enjoyed reading. The author gives us a close at hand look into the stories about those who some of the lesser-known casualties of the Great War. His account brings home the terrible waste and sacrifice of those involved who had links to one suburb in Sydney at the start of the War. Many of the soldiers featured were so young. These stories are well integrated into an insightful account of the campaigns into which these recruits were sent as well as the sad obituaries that appeared when news filtered back home of their sacrifice. Very moving and highly recommended.’ Michael Corrigan
‘Amazing Series. I was at first cautious about the length of the books, but not long into them found myself mesmerised. They are great. I especially like the way that the author has weaved Australia in the War into and throughout the individual stories in a way that connects the individual veterans with Australia’s War campaign. The research is exceptional, and the print is top class. I am really enjoying them.’ Adrian Galasso
About The Author
Brendan Bateman
Brendan Bateman was born in Sydney, Australia. A lifelong history enthusiast, Brendan studied both ancient and modern history at the University of Sydney. Acknowledging the truism that ‘there is no future in history’, he also pursued a law degree and has practised as a lawyer with a leading Australian law firm for over thirty years. However, his passion for history never waned. In 2009, he scratched that itch which eventually led to him self-publishing I am the First and the Last: The Fallen World War One ANZACs of St Mark’s Drummoyne in 2015. This work paved the way for his latest three volumes, Drummoyne’s Great War, which chronicle the lives of the ninety-five men commemorated on the Drummoyne War Memorial who served and died in the First World War.
