Practical Dad’s Guide
Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2024
This handbook provides an insightful guide for new fathers, aimed at helping them support their partner through pregnancy and early parenthood. It is structured around the CRAFT method - Consider, Recognize, Awareness, Fatherhood, and Time - giving dads a practical framework to navigate the emotional and physical challenges of fatherhood. One particularly engaging section is the “week-by-week breakdown” of fetal development, with comparisons like the baby’s size to a lemon in Week 14 and an apple by Week 22, along with explanations of the mother’s physical and emotional changes. This helps fathers visualize their baby’s growth while better understanding what their partner is experiencing.
The book also delves into the importance of prenatal appointments, from attending the 12-week scan to learning what to expect in childbirth classes during the third trimester. Personal stories, such as Daniel’s memorable experience in a childbirth class, where he learned how to properly support his wife during labor, add warmth and relatability. The handbook covers practical aspects, including how to soothe a newborn’s cries and postpartum care for the mother, but what truly stands out is its focus on fostering confidence in new fathers.
Interactive elements, such as sections where dads are encouraged to write down their thoughts after each milestone, give the book a personal touch. It’s well-organized and easy to follow, with a special emphasis on helping fathers embrace their new role and make time for self-care routines. From Daniel’s anecdote about assembling the crib to practical tips on handling sleepless nights, this guide offers real-life, relatable advice from experienced dads.

A great resource for dads, whether you’re expecting your first, second, or tenth child.

There are literally thousands of baby-rearing books out there; not so many that are specifically aimed at modern dads. This one is well worth your time. Brad Wells does a fantastic job of using his own personal experience to share valuable lessons with prospective parents. For dads and would be dads, it’s a basic How To guide on what to expect and how to prepare. And most importantly, Wells does a great job of explaining (as a man, TO male readers) exactly what’s happening with a woman’s body, from fertility through delivery. Essential reading.
